Curtain Call Meet and Greet with Christie Baugher

The next composer in our meet and greet series hails from Floyds Knobs, Indiana. Christie Baugher has been honing her theatrical skills since high school. Music, however, has been a constant presence in her life since she was young due to family traditions and piano ear training.

You may wonder why musical theatre? She shared, “Musical theatre in particular drew me in because, to my mind, it’s the perfect art form. It fuses storytelling and visual art and music in a way that creates empathy for and explores the dignity of characters that an audience might not otherwise care about.” I can personally think of so many musical theatre characters who commit wrongful acts, but we as audience members still feel empathy towards them.

Christie loves a challenge and it’s why she took on this project. She said, “I really enjoy writing for specific performers and audiences, and the idea of crafting a piece for the theatre students at Lynchburg without meeting them first seemed like a fun challenge.” After reading over questionnaires completed by Curtain Call students she created her song based on the question, “what scares you?”

In order to find out the answer to this question you have to attend the upcoming Curtain Call Cabaret featuring songs written by members of Lynchburg College’s Curtain Up Songwriting Workshop. I can’t wait to hear Christie’s song on April 29th at 7:30pm on the Dillard Main Stage.

Information Regarding Lynchburg College’s Curtain Up Songwriting Workshop: This inaugural program was created by the Lynchburg College Theatre Department and James Ballard, the program’s Artistic Director, featuring the new musical theatre ensemble, Curtain Call. The program will connect students to musical theatre songwriters in the business. The composers/lyricists are writing songs specifically for the group that will be performed in their April Curtain Up Writers Cabaret.
