The Woman Behind the Piano: Dana Ballard and Her Work with Curtain Call

You’ve probably seen Dana Ballard roaming the hallowed halls of the chapel or the stairs of Dillard, but do you know everything she does? Dana is music director of Curtain Call, staff accompanist for the music department, adjunct instructor of piano, an MA choral conducting graduate student, and she works in her church music department. How she has enough hours in the day is beyond me, but I caught up with her this week to bring you the latest Curtain Call Conversations.

Dana and Loretta Wittman, director of Curtain Call, have a history of working together, so this project seemed like a no brainer. Dana recalls, “It's almost hard to remember at this point HOW I got involved - it was all a group effort! I believe the original idea for the Curtain Call group was Loretta Wittman's, and she asked me to participate. I have also always loved the concept of the Broadway cabaret, and so it was a natural fit for me.” This type of program has never been seen on Lynchburg College’s campus and I think it will continue to grow as the years continue.

Her favorite part of Curtain Call is learning more about the ensemble members. She shared, “Each has a unique voice and personality, and it's been great fun making music together.” She meets with the students weekly in their accompanist slots and works on Curtain Call music in addition to other repertoire, technique and auditions. It’s wonderful the students have this time to learn and grow.

When I asked her to share her favorite song of the March Cabaret she replied, That's like asking which of my children is my favorite child! I love them all!” So in conclusion, if you want to hear all of Dana’s favorites you’ll have to attend the March Cabaret on the Dillard Mainstage apron March 16th, 17th, and 18th!
